The Ensemble Theatre Presents Women in the Pit

Kicking of its Anchor of Inspiration 2014-2015 Season with a
Regional Premiereby Joyce Sylvester

HOUSTON (September 1, 2014) –- The Ensemble Theatre presents the regional premiere drama Women in the Pit by Joyce Sylvester, and directed by Eileen J. Morris, Ensemble Theatre Artistic Director, with Opening Night and Media Reception, Thursday, September 18, 2014.

“This play is a fantastic catalyst for conversation in a time when many of our faith communities still struggle with progressive versus traditional beliefs over female pastors,” says Morris. “Our goal as a theatre is to offer another great story that gives a glimpse at varying perspectives on a topic some of us may not be aware of, or simply take for granted.”

Folks of Mount Zion Baptist Church are pretty riled up! Two deacons and two elders charged with the selection of a new pastor are at odds with one another when it appears that the most qualified candidate is a woman. This story addresses the age-old controversial issue of women in the pulpit.

Ordination in some denominations has been a right historically reserved for men. Over the years as more women have become ordained, some have still been restricted from holding higher office or leadership roles. Is equal employment applicable in this house of worship faced with such a big question: Should a woman be allowed to lead the church?

Featured cast members include: Wayne DeHart, Byron Jacquet, Jason Carmichael, JoAnne Davis Jones, Lisa Thomas-Morrison, Rachel Hemphill Dickson, and James West.

The Ensemble Theatre's 2014-2015 Season is sponsored in part by grants from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance, Texas Commission on the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts. United Airlines is the official airline sponsor for The Ensemble Theatre.

The Ensemble Theatre was founded in 1976 by the late George Hawkins to preserve African American artistic expression and to enlighten, entertain, and enrich a diverse community. Thirty-seven years later, the theatre has evolved from a small touring company to one of Houston’s finest historical cultural institutions.

The Ensemble is one of a few professional theatres in the region dedicated to the production of works portraying the African American experience. The oldest and largest professional African American theatre in the Southwest, it holds the distinction of being one of the nation’s largest African American theatres owning and operating its facility and producing in-house. Board President Emeritus Audrey Lawson led the capital campaign for The Ensemble’s $4.5 million building renovations that concluded in 1997. The Ensemble Theatre has fulfilled and surpassed the vision of its founder and continues to expand and create innovative programs to bring African American theatre to myriad audiences.
